Add in the pre-chopped harder to cook vegetables like carrots, string beans or celery or onions. And then after a few more minutes stir in softer vegetables like spring peas, zucchini or tomatoes. Add a touch of soy sauce, and you are done. The beauty about a stir-fry is that you do not have to start cooking until after she arrives. Perfect if she is habitually late, may be stuck in traffic, or may have to stay late at work a bit because she is into an important project.

Before undertaking the first cooking date, make sure you have any food allergies down cold. The life threatening ones are worry some, but the annoying little sensitivities can prove to be an intimacy killer as well. Keep an over the counter anti-histamine around for emergencies. Benedryl is one of the better known. Ask your pharmacist for another appropriate alternative to have on hand as well if benedryl is a problem.

Bad Things To Do

Don’t try something new. If it doesn’t turn out, then you’re stuck ordering pizza. Stick to your strengths and dazzle her with your expertise.

Stay away from curry, onions or garlic. They may be healthy, but they are not healthy for successful outcome of a dinner date. Always keep a bowl of mints in plain view for both of you to use after dinner.

Light deserts are the right choice. So sherbets, ice cream, fruit cocktails are in. Cheesecakes are out.

To top of your successful evening, keep several appropriate desert toppings in the fridge just in case. My standards are redi-whip, smuckers caramel syrup, smuckers strawberry syrup, and any good chocolate syrup I can find in the supermarket.

It’s always hard to decide what to do for the first date with someone. You don’t want to take her to mini-putt if her grandfather recently had a heart attack on the golf course, for example, even though mini-putt is awesome fun. A great sure-fire first date is the movie date. By that, I mean going out to the cinema to see a movie rather than renting a movie. Renting a movie is a good date idea when things are about to get physical, but this is about the first date.

Primarily, the movie date is great because the responsibility of maintaining conversation is significantly reduced, and you’re free to just be near each other. You can use your peripherals to check her out and her reactions without staring. Plus, when the movie is over, it’ll give you a chance to talk about the film, if nothing else is coming to mind. The worse the movie is, the better, in a way, because you can both mock it into the wee hours of the night.

Once you are at the movie, your next problem is what to buy for treats. A movie stalwart is popcorn, but is that the best choice? It has the advantage of being inexpensive, but the disadvantage is the propensity for it to stick in your teeth. Also, if your date wears dentures, then popcorn is a no-no. Consider chocolate candy like M&M's. Most women and most men like chocolate. For drinks, try to stay away from anything that is gassy or fizzy like soda pop because they will make you belch and that is not going to leave a favorable lasting impression. Most theaters will offer various types of non-carbonated beverages. One favorite is iced tea. No matter what your final decision is, remember that if you intend to also go out after the movie, then you might want to limit your eating while at the theater.

Good Movies

There are obviously movies that will put her in a romantic mood, and maximize your chances at first base. The first thing you should do is to ask her what she likes, and go from there. Scary movies are good, but not gory movies. You want her jumping and grabbing you, not vomiting into the licorice bag.

2. Sob Stories – Million Dollar Baby – Eastwood and Swank did an amazing job in this movie. I loved it. It is exactly what not to take a date on, as it only ends in sadness.

3. Adventure Movies – Most Bruce Willis adventure movies are just plain bad choices for a first date. Too much blood, guts and gore for the most part.

Going on a movie for a first date is almost a no-brainer. It will not put you into any dreamy romantic category as the guy who gave me the coolest and most unique date ever, but on the other hand, it is sort of expected, and usually a pretty safe bet. Certainly it is less stressful to you than say – asking her to go sky diving, or zip lining, or some other off the wall thing.

The worst thing about a movie date can also be it's best thing. It is hard to talk during a movie. In fact it is frowned upon. So that is bad. On the other hand, it gives you both a chance to get used to being around each other without a lot of pressure on anyone's part to keep the conversation flowing. So that is good. The movie itself will help to stimulate conversation after the movie is over, and give you something to do before you take her home. The worse the movie is, the better, in a way, because you can both mock it into the wee hours of the night.

Next consideration is what to get for treats. I recommend a shared popcorn bag. It establishes immediate intimacy, in that you’re sharing food. I was having a lot of trouble getting a date. The jacket was something else again and I had to buy one. I did not have a lot of money, but I was optimistic I would find something. Not being a fashion maven I generally just rely on the opinions and suggestions of the store clerks. I told him that I needed to get a jacket that would go well with the black pants that I had at home. He said I was in luck because they were having a sale on some jackets that they had recently imported from Mexico. The only thing was he forgot to tell me they were yellow and made out of what felt like burlap. They also seemed to be a little big on me but since I didn't have a lot to spend and the price was right I bought one anyway.

I pulled out all the stops that night! Showered, shaved, new aftershave, then I put on my dress pants and new jacket. My dad passed as I finished, winked and said “Nice Duds.” As I looked in the mirror that night after getting ready for my big date, I truly thought that I looked like a million bucks. And I had pulled out all the stops as well. Shower, shave, new haircut, new aftershave, and the new jacket to top it all off. Unfortunately I did not notice that there was a small thread hanging at the back of the jacket.

I arrived at the dance and went inside to meet my buddies who were already there. The place was jam packed. I think every teenager in town was there. My buddies had set this date up with me and she was a bit late. That did not bother me too much because it gave me a chance to hang with my friends and relax a bit. She was pretty cute, and seemed to be in a big hurry to get on the dance floor and strut her stuff. I remember holding her close as she had her arms around my neck. After the first dance, she told me that I had a loose thread on the back of my jacket and said that she would break it off for me.

As she pulled the thread it began to unravel. She pulled a little more and it began to fall to the floor. They were playing “All Shook Up” by Elvis Presley. It was a new rendition of it and I hardly recognized it as the tune that my dad used to play occasionally. The thread dangling on the floor eventually caught on someone. As it unraveled more quickly, other people were caught in it as well, and the effect snowballed very quickly. Eventually someone tripped, who knocked down someone else, who fell on a table and upset everything. By the time the smoke cleared, three couples were on the floor along with six upset tables. What a disaster! My so called buddies all fled the scene and left me to face the music alone.

The owner of the dance club came up to me and said, “What the hell are you trying to do, sabotage my business?” As I stood there alone wishing I could just crawl under the table and hide, people began to snicker and curse me. The owner quick marched me out of his establishment, and threw the wad of yellow string at me as I exited. There as almost nothing left of the jacket. I threw the wad of string and what was left of the jacket into the nearest dumpster on my way home. I was totally humiliated!

So there you have it, that was my last date with a girl, that my friends hooked me up with. I was in a dating slump. It got to the point I couldn't seem to buy a date. My normal night was sitting at home and licking my wounds. The only plus to this was I was becoming a killer gamer on my computer.

     As I walked down to the creek behind my house one sunny fourth of July last year, I was looking in awe at the fallen trees, and the shrubs that some people refer to as flowers, and smelling the water in the creek (that I know comes from the sewers), when a bird shit on my head. I thought “oh well” just another ordinary day. As I ran along, I came across a buddy of mine that I will call Stinky and please don't ask why I call him that, I think it should not be a mystery to you. As we walked, I told him about the unfortunate incident with the bird, and he replied “take me to the tree that you were standing under, its good luck”. If I had thought for one minute that it was good luck I would have rolled in it, (as you may have figured Stinky really doesn’t have much of a social life, but then again, neither do I).

         Our biggest problem is chatting with the opposite sex. Stinky can usually mumble a couple of sentences, then he has to leave the scene. I’m a little more confident since I work with quite a few women anyway. I can usually start a conversation with them before I start to shiver and have any confidence suddenly elude me, then I have to politely excuse myself.

    Stinky feels that women's standards are too high when it comes to dating, however, I beg to differ. I really don't believe for a minute the women suggesting that he have a shower before picking her up is considered “high slandered”. Stinky might be the least washed fellow I know, but he is one of the nicest (nicest not brightest). However, he does sometimes on occasion come up with pretty amazing idea's that make more sense then not, but I'm not sure about this one. “We will join a Dating Site” he yelled out. I said before sometimes he comes up with good idea's but this wasn't one of those times. He proceeded to tell me that a friend at work gave him the idea(some friend). “Is this the same friend that leaves deodorant and body wash on your desk?” I asked. “It sure is! He's a very thoughtful person,” (is he for real). Stinky said “My friend met a wonderful women on a dating site,” (what women?? the guy he's talking about is gay!) “Why would your gay friend use a dating site to meet women?” I asked, “I think your getting in over your head”. In the end, and after weeks of hiding from Stinky and his crazy idea, I finally decided to give in just to make him happy.

        As I tried to sleep that night, all I could think about was the last date I had, which, to me, had been a dismal failure. I’m sure the woman I'll call (“never full”), hadn’t eaten in a week prior to our date and she must have thought was independently wealthy or something! After she had gobbled up several appetizers as well as several other side dishes, expensive wine and the entree of lamb chops, I checked the balance on my Visa card, then to my surprise she suggested we order desert! “Desert!?” I quickly reminded her that this was not an all you can eat dinner, she then jumped up called me things I dare not repeat and made her way to the door. I ran after her and asked if she would like to go out with me again, at which time she slugged me with her hand bag (I guess that meant no!). So I went back to the table and sat alone looking at the bill she had run up and wondered if I would be able to get lots of overtime at work next week to pay for it.

They had one child and are expecting another any time now. As for myself, it took a little longer, but I finally found my soul mate, and we are expecting our first child soon. Life is great and it keeps getting better!
